The new surface is called "Top Trek" and is a recycled material that is porous, so it prevents puddles forming. This makes it last longer than other materials and it looks more natural than tarmac. The material is also friendlier to horses who are using the route. The route upgraded runs from Bodmin Road, to Astley Industrial Estate, and then on to the long distance, off-road cycle route alongside the East Lancs Road between Merseyside and Manchester. The scheme is part of the annual programme of cycling improvements carried out by Wigan Council.Cyclists are reminded that, although they are permitted to ride on bridleways, they must give way to horses and pedestrians.
