The old railway line through Pennington has been upgraded with a new surface, to allow cycling in all weathers to Pennington Flash Country Park and Leigh Sports Village News and events
Maps and Guides

We have an interactive cycle map and an order form for copies of paper maps.

If you're cycling in the Pennington area, you can do it in pretty much any weather, thanks to the new, durable surface called "Top Trek." It is a recycled material that sheds water more easily, keeping mud and puddles at bay. The natural looking appearance is more appropriate away from roads. It is also kinder to horses using the route (it is a bridleway).

Reaching Pennington Flash, Wigan & Leigh College, and Leigh Sports Village is now easier and more attractive for all users. This is because the route is away from the busy traffic on St. Helen's Road without the distance being any longer.

This latest scheme improves a 3½ mile circular route, taking in Leigh town centre, the Leeds & Liverpool and Bridgewater Canals, Leigh Sports Village, and Pennington Flash Country Park. That's about 1hr 15 mins walking or 30 minutes cycling - the recommended daily level of exercise for adults.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal cycle permit
Bridgewater Way - National Cycle Network Regional Route 82
Pennington Flash Country Park
Wigan & Leigh College - 6th Form Centre
Leigh Sports Village

This scheme is part of the annual programme of cycling improvements carried out by Wigan Council.

Cyclists are reminded that, although they are permitted to ride on bridleways, they must give way to horses and pedestrians.
